About Us

A creative thinklab

A whakairo shop

A fusion of tradition and technology

Te Ara Hihiko — ‘The Creative Pathway’, was founded in 2012 when an artwork commission project brought us together to blend artistic cultural storytelling with technical mastery. Since then, we have refined a groundbreaking digital tool to produce large-scale modern expressions of traditional Māori carving—whakairo.

Our distinct designs communicate stories in public spaces – panels in schools, carved surfaces in airports, on cycleway shelters, and at the entry to a hospital. With a commitment to environmental sustainability, we use locally sourced and re-used and recycled materials where possible. As we celebrate over a decade of our own creative pathway, we remain receptive to new possibilities, connections and innovative approaches to Māori artistry.

Our Workshop

A makerspace

An education hub

A community collective

We welcome collaboration with other artists and designers, offering our fully functional workshop as a space for creative exploration.

Based in Waiohiki Arts Village, Napier, we provide artistic, cultural and technical guidance, as well as access to top of the range equipment for projects seeking to deliver meaningful impressions with a cultural dimension.
