Our Work
Customs Quay Wall Art
Environmental pieces displayed as wall art within a mixed residential and commercial complex
Situated on the waterfront at Customs Quay, the original kaupapa for this project speaks of navigation and weaving people together. Displayed as wall art within the mixed residential and commercial complex, the designs were to be presented in the foyer, creating a dialogue and connection between the building and its occupiers to the special character precinct of Ahuriri, its industrial port and fishing context
The Work
The standout diamond design is a nod to the area’s ‘sawtooth roof’ vernacular, extracting the spirit and the visual distinctiveness of the surrounding environment. Drawing inspiration from cultural narratives, the artwork expresses key themes of weather and ocean navigation, which dovetails seamlessly with the sawtooth roofs design, evoking a sense of motion and direction through the angular paths.
Standing in the foyer today, individuals will experience a fascinating interconnectedness between nature, people and the journeys they take. The angular design enhances the storytelling, as the shifting light creates shadows, evoking rhythms of movement and meteorology.
