Our Work
Kaweka Health
By weaving designs into the core structure, steel posts became a canvas for whakairo in this new facility.
As Hawke’s Bay’s newest state-of-the-art surgical facility, the Kaweka Hospital project sought to integrate culturally significant artwork into the architecture of the building. With an important connection to the Kawaka Ranges, the designs were created to represent the symbiotic relationship between the land, people and healthcare.
The Work
Providing artistic direction and advice, the project took advantage of existing elements of the building and weaved designs into the core structure. Steel posts became a canvas for whakairo, serving as a constant reminder of the harmony between nature and care.
Today, as people pass by the sleek, contemporary hospital, they are provided with an enchanting display of Māori storytelling on the exterior pillars. The integration of artwork and architecture fosters an environment not only for pyhsical healing, but represents Te Whare Tapa Wha; an inclusive holistic approach to hauora.
