Our Work
Ngā Riu o te Oranga
An entry pou for Kaweka Hospital, carrying a coded message of care for everyone who walks through the door.
Ngā Riu o te Oranga – the channels of life – stands at the entrance to Kaweka Hospital, welcoming, guiding and holding the stories of healing. Following our earlier whakairo on the building’s exterior columns, the pou extends the kaupapa to the threshold, where the patient’s journey begins.
The Work
The pou draws on the taki toru rafter pattern, once a coded signal sent across the ocean to say: we have arrived, it is safe here, follow us. We added a fourth stroke to carry a similar message for today. Each stroke is a channel of care, moving through the hidden pathways of the body to restore balance and wellbeing.
Taki Tuatahi – Whakatōhenehene
(Observation and inquiry)
Every journey begins with listening. The patient arrives, and the clinician watches, listens and understands.
Taki Tuarua – Whakamātau
(Investigation and diagnosis)
Understanding unlocks the pathway forward. Tests, scans and analysis reveal the next step.
Taki Tuatoru – Whakarauora
(Intervention and healing)
To act with skill is to restore balance. Precision surgery and teamwork bring the body back into harmony.
Taki Tuawhā – Whakaora Tūturu
(Ongoing care and renewal)
Healing continues through connection. Recovery and the return to whānau and community renew life and mauri.
The pou honours those who navigate the body’s intricate landscapes with skill, compassion and courage, and the meeting point of mātauranga and modern science. In surgery, as in carving, the work lies in seeing each part, knowing its role, and restoring it so the whole can thrive.
Kei te tomokanga o te Hōhipera o Kaweka e tū ana tēnei pou hei whakatau, hei ārahi, hei pupuri i ngā kōrero o te whakaora. Ko tōna āhua he mea hāpai ake i te tauira tāhū taki toru – he tohu tuku karere i te moana e kī ana, ‘kua tau mātou, he haumaru tēnei wāhi, haere mai’. I ēnei rā, e rere ana taua karere i roto i ngā riu e whā, he awa manaaki, e haere ana i roto i ngā ara huna o te tinana tangata hei whakahoki i te taurite me te oranga.
